How we count
What a posting is, which postings are counted, and the limits of every figure on this blog.
What we record
InternDoor watches engineering internships and entry-level jobs as they are published on public job boards and on companies’ own careers pages, and records each posting the first time it sees it. The same records feed the InternDoor board, the monthly reports and this blog.
Which postings are counted
- The employer is on our list. A posting is counted only if its employer is on a list we keep of companies we believe are real and pay their interns. The list grows as employers are added, so a bigger total from one month to the next can mean a bigger list rather than a bigger market.
- It is an engineering role. Software, data, AI and machine learning, hardware and embedded roles, with other engineering roles such as core engineering, research and IT counted separately. Sales, marketing and operations roles are not counted.
- It is in India, by the location the posting states.
- Internships and entry-level jobs are counted separately. An entry-level job that asks for two or more years of experience, or is titled senior, lead or manager, is not listed or counted.
Definitions
- Posting. One advertisement. A role advertised in three cities is three postings, so a count of postings is not a count of different jobs.
- Month. A posting belongs to the month in which InternDoor first recorded it, in Indian time.
- Stated. A fact such as a stipend or a duration counts as stated only when the posting’s own text gives it. An experience range such as “0 to 1 years” is not a duration.
- Applicant count. The figure the posting itself showed at the moment InternDoor first recorded it. It is a snapshot, not a final count, and not every posting shows one.
- Work arrangement, city and skills. Read from the posting’s text. A skill counts once per posting, from a fixed list of around 100 software and hardware skills, whether the posting lists it as required or as nice to have.
- Kind of role. Software, hardware or other engineering, by InternDoor’s own reading of each title.
Frozen months
Each month’s figures are compiled two days after the month ends and stored. Later changes to our list, or to a posting, do not change a month already compiled. When a frozen figure is found to be wrong, the correction is published in the post that uses it.
What these figures are not
- Not a census of every internship or job in India. They cover the employers on our list.
- Not a measure of pay. “Did not state a stipend” does not mean unpaid; it means the figure was not on the posting.
- Not a final count of applicants. Applicant counts are what a posting showed when we found it.
- Not complete about skills. Something a posting does not mention is missing from our count, not absent from the job.
