Key findings

  1. 425 engineering internships were posted in India in September 2026, by 159 of the employers InternDoor tracks.1
  2. 47% of those employers posted exactly one. The ten busiest posted 123 between them.
  3. 42% of the roles were in Bengaluru. Only 3% were fully remote.
  4. 11% already had 100 or more applicants when we first recorded them, usually within hours of going up.
  5. 4% stated a stipend: 18 postings, from 10 different roles.
  6. 5% were posted on a Saturday or a Sunday.

Every month InternDoor counts the engineering internships it recorded in India, then freezes the count so that a figure quoted today is still true next year. September 2026 is the second full month, and its complete tables are in the monthly report. This post reads the same month the way an applicant would: who is hiring, where, when, and how quickly a posting fills up.

A long tail of employers

159 employers posted at least one engineering internship in September. The ten busiest, led by IQVIA with 22 and S&P Global with 19, posted 123 between them, 29% of the month.1

One role posted in several cities counts once per city, so a count of postings is not a count of different jobs.

The other end of the month matters more if you are applying. 74 employers, nearly half, posted exactly one internship, and another 63 posted two to four. Together the employers that posted fewer than five put up 236 of the 425 postings, more than half.

Two things follow. A shortlist of well-known names covers less than half of the openings, so watching only the careers pages of companies you already know means missing most of the month. And a large count is not the same as a large number of different jobs: several of the busiest employers post one role in several cities, and each city is a separate posting.

Where the roles were

Bengaluru had 177 of the 425 postings, 42%. Hyderabad, Gurugram, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune followed, and the six cities together held about 85% of the month.

Remote internships were rare. 273 postings said the work is on site and 63 said hybrid. Only 14, about 3%, were fully remote, and 75 did not say.

For an applicant outside these six cities, the practical reading is that most offers mean moving or commuting for the length of the internship. A remote engineering internship is not suspicious on that basis alone, but it is unusual among the employers we track, so it deserves a careful read. Our guide to checking a posting covers what to look for.

What kind of engineering

Three in four were software, data or AI roles: 325 of the 425, by InternDoor’s reading of each title. Hardware and embedded roles were 35, and 65 were other engineering roles such as core engineering, research and IT support.

If hardware is your field, the pool is small: 35 postings in a month, across every employer we track. It pays to watch for adjacent roles such as embedded software, firmware and test automation, and to apply to them as they appear rather than waiting for a perfect match.

When postings went up

Of the 352 postings we found within hours of going up, 18 were posted on a Saturday or a Sunday. Tuesday, with 83, and Wednesday, with 82, were the busiest days.

Do not treat the busiest day as a rule. In August it was Monday, with 75 of 289.2 What held in both months is that postings go up on working days and weekends are quiet: 9% of August’s postings and 5% of September’s appeared on a Saturday or Sunday.

How fast the queue forms

For 333 postings we could see the applicant count the posting itself showed at the moment we first recorded it, usually within a few hours of it going up. 11% already showed 100 or more. 46% showed fewer than 25, and 9% showed none yet.

In August the share at 100 or more was 22%.2 One month is not a trend, and the two months differ, but they agree on the point that matters: some postings pass a hundred applicants within hours. Applying in the first day or two puts you in the shorter queue.

Pay: 18 postings out of 425

Only 18 postings stated a stipend, from 10 different roles; the others are the same roles posted in more than one city. The frozen monthly report counted 19. Checking each posting by hand found that one of those figures was the year a company was founded, not a stipend, so the correct count is 18. We list all 10 roles, and what to ask when a posting says nothing, in a separate report on stipends.

What this means if you are applying

  • Watch new postings, not only famous names. More than half of September’s postings came from employers that posted fewer than five.
  • Apply within a day or two. Some postings collect a hundred applicants within hours.
  • Look on working days. Weekend postings were 5% to 9% of the month.
  • Expect to be on site, mostly in six cities. Remote roles were 3% of September.
  • Ask about the stipend early. 96% of postings will not tell you.

How this was counted

These are the engineering internships InternDoor recorded in India between 1 and 30 September 2026, from employers on a list we keep of companies we believe are real and pay their interns. It is not a census of every internship in India, and a bigger month can mean a bigger list rather than a bigger market. Entry-level full-time jobs are not included.

The employer, city, day and applicant figures are copied from the frozen monthly report. The employer tail, the work arrangement and the kind of engineering were counted over the same 425 postings for this post. City, work arrangement and skills are read from each posting’s own text. Full definitions are on How we count.
