The skills Indian engineering internship postings ask for, and what to learn first

We counted the skills named in 575 engineering internship postings in India. Software roles share a short, stable list; hardware roles want something else. Here is the list, and how to use it without chasing every line of it.

Key findings

  1. 52% of software, data and AI internship postings that named a skill named Python, more than any other.
  2. 35% named SQL and 33% named Java. Of the postings that named Python, 39% also named SQL.
  3. 5 is the number of skills the middle posting named.
  4. 48% of hardware and embedded postings named C++, ahead of Python at 41%, though only 44 such postings named a skill.

A posting’s skills line is the closest thing an applicant has to a syllabus. Read one at a time, they look endless. Read 575 at once, they settle into a short list. We counted every skill named in the engineering internships InternDoor recorded in India in August and September 2026, and split them by the kind of role.

Software, data and AI: a short, stable list

483 software, data and AI postings named at least one skill. Python, SQL and Java lead, a long way ahead of the rest.

The order barely moved between the two months. Across every engineering internship, not only software, Python was named in 50% of the postings that named a skill in August and 51% in September.12

Below the top three, the list splits into two kinds of thing. Some are tools you can learn in a few weekends and show in a project: Git, one cloud platform, a CI/CD pipeline. Others are fundamentals. Algorithms and data structures are named in about one posting in six, and that count understates them, because coding tests are built on them whether or not a posting names them. That last point is our reading, not something we can count.

Hardware and embedded: a different list, and a small one

Hardware and embedded internships are few. Only 44 named a skill across the two months, so one or two postings move a percentage by several points. Read the order, not the decimals.

C++ leads, then Python, and then the skills of the trade: PCB design, Verilog, physical design, signal integrity, and the serial protocols SPI, UART and I2C. Perl and MATLAB, the scripting tools of chip design and test, appear too. If this is your field, a software-heavy skills list from a general guide will point you at the wrong things.

What we would learn first

This section is advice, built on the counts above but not measured by them.

  1. For software, data and AI roles: Python and SQL first. Together they cover the largest share of postings, and 39% of the postings that named Python named SQL as well.
  2. Then Git, and use it for everything you build. It was named in more than a quarter of software postings, and a public history of real commits is evidence a recruiter can check.
  3. Then one of Java or JavaScript, chosen by the work you want. Java leans towards backend and enterprise roles, JavaScript towards web and frontend roles.
  4. Build one project that uses three of them together. A small web service in Python with a SQL database, kept in Git and deployed on AWS, touches four of the top six.
  5. For hardware and embedded roles: C or C++, then one hardware description language. Verilog is the one these postings named. Add a microcontroller project that talks over SPI, UART or I2C.
  6. Do not chase the tail. A skill named in one posting in twenty is worth learning for a specific role you are applying to, not for a general CV.

Reading one posting’s skills line

The middle posting in our count named five skills. Most applicants will not match all five, and a posting rarely expects them to. Two habits help.

  • Look for the skill named twice. A skill that appears in both the duties and the requirements is usually the one the work turns on.
  • Use the posting’s own words. If it says PostgreSQL and you have used PostgreSQL, write PostgreSQL, not “databases”. Screening is often a search for exact words.

How this was counted

These are the 757 engineering internships InternDoor recorded in India in August and September 2026; 575 of them named at least one skill. A skill counts once per posting when the posting’s own text names it, matched against a fixed list of around 100 software and hardware skills, word by word, so “spring” as a season is not read as the Spring framework. A skill listed as “nice to have” counts the same as one listed as required. Software, hardware and other roles are InternDoor’s own reading of each title; the 110 postings in other engineering roles are not charted separately, because only 48 of them named a skill.
